The Hatsukokoro VG5 wa-petty is a Japanese utility knife made in Seki, Japan. Its core is made from VG5 steel, a variant in the VG steel family produced by Takefu Steel. Compared to the more popular VG10, VG5 offers increased toughness, making it more forgiving and less prone to chipping. Crafted entirely from stainless steel, it requires minimal maintenance. The blade is paired with an octagonal walnut handle with a horn ferrule.

A petty knife excels at detailed work where precision is key. It's ideal for trimming meat, slicing small vegetables, peeling fruits, and performing intricate cuts where a larger chef's knife might be unwieldy. Its compact size allows for enhanced control and maneuverability in tight spaces, making it a versatile tool in any kitchen.
